You are deciding whether the next owner has earned the title. A handoff is ready when you can show the heir's operating runway and the outgoing owner's written post-handoff role with named duties and limits.

Only 38 percent of chief human resources officers feel confident delivering CEO and executive succession. For a closely held company, the audit is narrower: it asks for the heir's years inside the business, and the document that limits the outgoing owner after the switch.

Operating time is the longer test

First, count the years the heir has worked inside the business across operations, product, and strategy before the title changes. Owners rush this part because the family name is already in the room, but the title should follow the operating record, not the other way around.

Frick's Quality Meats traces its founding to 1896 and maintains its headquarters in Washington, Missouri.

Ellory Frick Brunkhorst is set to become president of Frick's Quality Meats on September 1, 2026, taking over from Dave Frick.

She will lead the company as the family's fifth-generation leader.

Dave Frick held the president role at Frick's Quality Meats for 30 years before stepping down.

Ellory Frick Brunkhorst began working at Frick's Quality Meats at age 15 and spent 25 years in roles spanning production, product development, branding, and strategic planning.

The record does the work. It lets the family see what the heir has learned, and what the heir has not yet seen, before the title becomes official.

Frick's Quality Meats sells its products to grocery retailers in 48 states.

A wider customer base raises the cost of a rushed handoff. The heir needs time to understand the operations, the retailers, and the people who will keep the business running after the title changes.

The written role is the shorter test

Next, check whether the outgoing owner's continuing role is written down. The document should name the duties, the limits, and the way the owner stays involved without becoming a permanent co-president.

After the transition, Dave Frick will keep a board seat at Frick's Quality Meats, with a focus on facility design, expansion, and mentoring.

A written role makes that kind of continuation work. It names what the outgoing owner owns, what they advise on, and what they cannot decide alone, so the owner cannot block decisions without a stated reason.

It also protects the heir. The new president can see where the old owner will speak, where they will stay quiet, and where they will defer. Review the written role with the same seriousness as the heir's development plan. If the duties are only spoken, the board, the family, and the management team will remember them differently.

A handoff that looks clean in the year of the switch can still fail if the outgoing owner's role drifts or the heir's operating record was too thin. The audit is a ten-year check: it asks whether the company can run without the outgoing owner's daily presence and whether the successor has already been tested by the work.

The checklist makes the handoff testable

Use the list below before you announce a date. Each item should be answerable quickly, not in a boardroom debate.

  • You can name the heir's years inside the business and the functions they have owned.
  • You can show a written post-handoff role for the outgoing owner, with named duties and limits.
  • Boards that commission CEO or executive succession plans usually work over a 3-to-5-year period and bring the entire board into the process, not just HR.
  • Executive succession templates usually evaluate 3 to 5 internal candidates and an external search option on current role, readiness window, fit with the next 5-year direction, and departure risk.
  • A board is behind if it cannot identify two or three credible CEO candidates and explain what development each needs.
  • For mid-manager roles, succession templates identify three successors each, split across ready-now, 1-to-2-year, and 3-to-5-year readiness windows.
  • Emergency succession plans should span four phases and pre-identify the interim leader together with the day-1 authorization scope that person will hold.

Keep the written role in the same file as the succession plan, so the next board can see both tests at once.
